Get familiar with German States
The Federal Republic of Germany consists of 16 states which are known as “Land” or “Bundesland” in German. Thirteen of these states include a number of cities and villages and two states (Berlin and Hamburg) only have one city each. Bremen is also a city state. These 16 states are introduced in the following:
- Bayern: this state is the largest state of Germany and it is located in the south of the country. The capital city of this state is Munich, which is the third most populated city of Germany. The State of Bayern is bordered on the south by Austria and on the east by Czech Republic.
- Niedersachsen: the second largest state in north western part of Germany. Hanover is the capital city of this state.
- Baden-Württemberg: the third largest state of Germany. This capital city of this state is Stuttgart. This state is one of the most advanced states in industry, technology, development, and research.
- Nordrhein-Westfalen: the fourth largest state of Germany. This state is the most populated state in Germany. The capital city of this state is Düsseldorf, and its most famous city is Cologne.
- Brandenburg: after the union of East and West Germany, this state was created in the north eastern part of Germany. This state has a relatively low population density. The capital city of this state is Potsdam, which is on the border of Berlin, the capital city of Germany.
- Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: this state is located in the north eastern part of Germany. The capital city of this state is Schwerin.
- Hessen: this state is located in western Germany. The capital of this state is Wiesbaden and its largest city is Frankfurt, which is the center of German economy.
- Sachsen-Anhalt: the eights largest state of Germany. The capital city of this state is Magdeburg. Before 1990, this state was part of Eastern Germany.
- Rheinland-Pfalz: this state is located in the western part of Germany. The capital city of this state is Mainz. This state was under the rule of the allies for about 50 years.
- Sachsen: this state is in the east of Germany bordered by Poland from the east. Dresden is the capital city of this state.
- Thüringen: this state is located in central Germany and its capital city is Erfurt. This state is divided into 17 districts.
- Schleswig-Holstein: this state is located in northern Germany. The capital city of this state is Kiel.
- Saarland: this state is a small state in south western Germany. Saarbrücken is the capital city of this state. This state has a border with France.
- Berlin: this state is the capital of Germany and its largest city. This state only has one city.
- Hamburg: the second largest city in Germany and similar to Berlin is a city-state. This city is the third largest port city in Europe.
- Bremen: this state only has two cities, i.e. Bremen and Bremerhaven. The capital city of this state is Bremen. Bremen City straddles the Weser River in northwest Germany.
